Savinnie Ho has been participating in CMC’s Young Musicians Program as a violist for the past three years. During this time, she’s volunteered to demonstrate her instrument in CMC’s Instrument Petting Zoos a number of times. These events give people of all ages a chance to try out an instrument, and sometimes inspire a new musical journey! Savinnie led demos at our annual Spring Gala at the Fairmont Hotel and during CMC’s quarterly Sunday Open House and Jam Sessions. At our most recent Open House, she organized a team of Young Musicians Program students to run the entire Instrument Petting Zoo. We asked her to share some of her experiences with us.
Q: Tell us what it’s like to demonstrate your instrument and give others a chance to try it out?
It’s a wonderful experience because you get to interact with people all over the community. Some are experts, some don’t know anything about music. All are interested and willing. I’ve learned that music is a language! I feel lucky to have this language to communicate with others.
It was great to work with kids who were really shy at first, but were brave enough to try the instruments. There were a few times when I thought people didn’t know how to play, then they just picked up the instrument and played really well!
Interacting with people of different ages is tough, but I’ve learned to let them investigate themselves and discover music on their own. What I hope is to inspire someone to play music: the next Beethoven perhaps!
Q: What was your introduction to music?
I was watching TV one day and saw a girl who was deaf and mute, but playing great music and doing great things. I thought, music is really powerful! I started with the violin in 4th grade. It was basic: we didn’t learn how to read notes at that point, but it was still really fun. In 6th grade, I was introduced to the viola at Hoover Middle School. I really liked the texture of the sound, it’s really full. It’s like a cello, but it has a unique sound of its own.
Q: Tell me about your experience in CMC’s Young Musicians Program.
I’ve been coming on Saturdays to the Young Musicians Program for the past three years. I really appreciate the opportunity to learn about theory. It’s taught me that there is a lot behind music, a lot of structure! I’m not great at theory, but I have friends in the class and we can learn together so it’s really fun!
